A look at PewPew 2 (Jean-François Geyelin)

The indie gaming world has more Geometry Wars clones than can fit comfortably on the average hard drive, so it's no surprise that there's one for Android phones.  But PewPew 2 feels less like a straight-faced copy, and more like a way for Geyelin to experiment with a Geometry Wars-esque engine.

The original PewPew -- free on the android market -- is nothing special.  Choose a mode, fly around, shoot enemies, and throw your phone against the wall because of the impossible requirements to unlock new ships. But the sequel includes a multi-stage campaign mode that throws in enough clever ideas to make each of the 17 levels feel fresh.  Springs attach to the ship and limit its movement. Enemies can only be destroyed if the ship is a matching color. Each thumb controls a separate ship with a handy beam of death connecting the two.

Along with its campaign, PewPew2 includes all of the content from the original as part of its “Infinity Mode,” and it looks like Geyelin plans to create even more campaign stages in the future

Make no mistake – this game can get hard, especially for those not used to controlling a dual-stick game with a touch screen.  Unlocking the last ship demands a level of dedication that requires a minor mental disorder, and trying to beat the campaign mode on hard will make you wish you coughed up for that insurance policy as the broken remains of your phone .

The free original gives a decent idea of the simple game mechanics, and the sequel runs a decent $2.99/€1.99/£1.75.  Both include online high scores, and both save replays of all your glorious (or embarrassing) attempts to get on the high score list.
